The big day is upon us: The only scratching so far for the big race has been Mourayan. The 14-1 shot had to pull out after not recovering from Saturday’s Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington.

Williams and Rawiller hearing postponed till this afternoon: Craig Williams and Nash Rawiller will have to wait until this afternoon to learn their fate as VCAT has postponed their hearings.The 2 are challenging suspensions which will potentially keep them from riding in The Cup.

Old favourite misses out: Ageing stayer Bauer has missed out on the Melbourne Cup by the smallest of margins. Less than $1000 prize money was the difference between the 24th and 25th horse. Bauer, a former second place getter, was rated as Trainer Luca Cumani’s best chance in the Cup.

Big Saturday: With the announcement of both the final field and barrier draw tonight, today looms a huge day at Flemington. The Lexus Stakes and the Mackinnon Stakes will have a huge say in who gets to race on Tuesday

Williams ban stands: Dunaden rider Craig Williams’ ban has been upheld after a hearing today. Williams is considering going to VCAT to appeal the ban. Monday looms as D-Day for the jockey. A French replacement jockey also arrives on Monday.

Moonee Valley showcase: There are plenty of Melbourne Cup horses on show today at the Valley. With the Group II Drake International and of course the Cox Plate, there will be plenty of horses to look out for today.

Bauer and Dunaden shorten: Bauer has shortened the most in Cup markets today. The 9 year old’s odds has shortened from $61 into $17 after Wednesday’s gutsy run in the Geelong Cup. Dunaden has also come in from odds of $21 to $10 to be 2nd favourite.

Bart unsure on Illo: Cup king Bart Cumming’s doesn’t seem so sure about his hope for a 13th triumph. When he first saw the German 6 year old he believed he was too light. With much Illo has put on 20 kilos and is now looking better shape to make the 2 miles. Illo’s odds are currently at $26 and he will be racing on Saturday at the Group 2 Drake International on Saturday.

Dunaden wins Geelong Cup: French raider Dunaden has triumphed in the Geelong Cup. The stayer was too strong for the field which contained 8 Melbourne Cup hopefuls. Bauer also finished third and assured itself a berth in the big race for 2011.

All Important Geelong Cup tomorrow: With eight Melbourne Cup contenders running in the Geelong Cup tomorrow, all eyes will be on the race. Of the eight nominations only one, Dunaden, has a guaranteed start at Flemington for the big race, with Bauer a former 2nd place getter in The Race That Stops A Nation needing to win to assure itself a place.

Godolphin lands: Godolphin has arrived in Australia in preparation for this year’s Melbourne Cup. Lost In The Moment and Modun are this year’s hopes for the mighty racing corporation. The Cup has so far proved elusive for the stable and with the their runner’s odds outsde $20, it seems this is unlikely to be their year.
Early forecasts are wet: Early forecasts have predicted a big chance of rain for Cup Day. A 28 day forecast has estimated a 75% chance of rain for the 2011 Melbourne Cup
